How to do competitor analysis for dropshipping, step by step

Competitor analysis tells you whether a product has room for you: who already sells it, at what price, with what message, and where they are weak. This guide walks through doing it by hand, then shows how to shorten it.

Step 1: find the real competitors

Search the product the way a buyer would, on Google, on Facebook and Instagram, and on marketplaces. Open the results and sort the stores into three groups: established brands with their own identity, other dropshippers selling the same product, and dead or abandoned stores. Only the first two are competitors. Ten live stores will tell you more than fifty stale ones.

Look for a pattern in who appears. If the same few brands dominate every search, the market is concentrated. If it is full of near-identical dropshipping stores, expect price pressure.

Step 2: record prices, offers and shipping

For each live competitor, note the selling price, any bundles or discounts, the stated shipping time and cost, and the guarantee. Put them in a simple table. You are looking for the going rate and the spread: a tight cluster means a settled market price, a wide spread means sellers are still testing and there may be room to position differently.

  • Selling price and any visible discount
  • Bundles, multi-buy offers and upsells
  • Shipping cost and delivery time
  • Returns policy and guarantee
  • Review count and rating, if shown

Step 3: study their ads

Use the Facebook Ad Library to see which competitors are advertising and for how long. An ad that has run for months is usually paying for itself. Note the angle each ad leads with, the format and the offer. If five competitors lead with the same angle, that angle is crowded; an angle nobody uses may be a gap or may be a dead end, which is why you test it.

Step 4: read the reviews for what buyers actually say

Reviews on competitor pages, marketplaces and social comments are the cheapest source of customer language. Note repeated complaints, which are weaknesses you can fix in your offer, and repeated praise, which is the angle that already resonates. Slow shipping, unclear sizing and weak quality are common gaps a newcomer can address.

Step 5: work out your margin at the market price

Take the going rate and check whether the product leaves room for profit after sourcing, shipping, payment fees and the ad cost to win a sale. Our profit margin calculator gives you break-even ad cost and break-even ROAS in a few seconds. If you cannot make the numbers work at the market price, you need a higher price, a cheaper source or a different product.

Step 6: decide, and write down why

Choose one of three outcomes: go, because the market is open and the margin works; wait or change the angle, because the product is crowded or thin; or skip, because there is no profitable position. Record the reason so you can compare products consistently later.

Doing it in 45 seconds instead

Steps 1 to 6 take an afternoon per product when done by hand. TrendHunterNeo condenses them into one report covering the competitor landscape and pricing, ad performance and marketing gaps, margin and a go or wait verdict. You can also browse our public competitor database to see top-selling products on real stores. The hand method is still worth knowing, because it teaches you what to verify in any report.

Frequently asked questions

How many competitors should I analyse?

Five to ten live, relevant competitors is usually enough to see the going price, the common angles and the gaps. More than that mostly adds noise.

Where do I see competitors' ads?

The Facebook Ad Library is free and shows active ads by page. TrendHunterNeo reports also link to it for the product you analyse.

What if there are no competitors?

That can mean an open market or no demand. Check demand signals before you assume it is an opportunity.

Can this be automated?

Much of it can. A TrendHunterNeo report covers the competitor landscape, pricing, ad context, margin and a verdict in about 45 seconds, and your first 5 are free.
